STANDARD: Students use the reading process to demonstrate understanding of literary and informational texts.
In order to do this, our team roughly follows this schedule:
Monday: Read and respond--Students read in a book of their own choosing. At the end of the period, they write a response to what they are reading. NOTE: Response does not mean summary. Students have bookmarks with a long list of response ideas.
Tuesday and Wednesday: Reading and studying issues presented in one of three thematic readers: FREE AT LAST (Civil Rights Movement), DARK DAYS (Great Depression), and VOICES OF THE HOLOCAUST. We only have classroom sets of these texts, so most of this reading is completed in class unless a student has make up work to complete. We also show some movies that deal with these themes.
Thursday: Vocabulary quiz over words we learned the previous Thursday. We use a program that presents new vocabulary words in cartoons. Students copy these words, along with the link and the definitions, in their notebooks today and complete some activity using the words--a skit, story, game, etc.
Friday: TeenBiz – On line program) Students read at least two articles and complete the activities. They may need to finish this at home. NOTE – This activity may be moved if the teacher is gone since it is fairly easy for a substitute to monitor.
